I still remember the first time I heard this PITB. Points of reference...didnt start listening to the Dead until 88, first show in 1990

For this show, I was working and had it streaming through earbuds. With a few minutes left in the song, at the depths of the insanity, I tore the earbuds off, threw them on my desk and jumped out of my chair to walk away...all in one motion. I didn't know what I had just heard, but knew that my point of reference for the Dead had just changed. I had to take a lap around the office to regain my mental composure.

There are many other great PITB's, but this one was my intro to another dimension of the band...and there was no going back.

I could not agree more. This has something in it that is irreplaceable and special in so many ways, and not just Phil.
A song of songs as they say.

A review of this show that you might find synchs up nicely with your initial reaction to the PITB from this evening. Quite a tour de force for the uninitiated.

Subject: Playing for their lives
When someone asks you why people play the bass. this is what you need to play to them. Phil bombing the way forth for the band But that's just the surface we are shoveling through. Is jerry leading? is Phil leading? does it matter? when this kind of interplay boils through the surface of their psyche into the instruments, you can follow a fractal and reach any conclusion you like. that's the power of this version. it's jazz; a path that any creative being aspires towards in some shape or form. an infinity of patterns and interplay that you get to pick and follow from the content of the noise wall that is put up through the sentient exploration and experiential familiarity that the grateful dead honed over the years; the essence of what makes them such a force.

Well don't keep me in suspense. I've given up on this sort of thing.

He tried to recreate the 11/18 /72 show.

Thankfully no audio beyond the set openers.

Actually I want you to listen/watch it so I don't have to. :)

But I guess your second sentence answers that.

I hope that's a Hangover II reference because it's spectacular.

"Demolition"

[Sung by Flash and his Cronies in their Den]

I spy with my little eye
Anything here that I can buy.
I see a little thatched cottage
Looking so neat
With compulsory purchase we can buy it up cheap.
Then we'll pull up the floor boards,
Knock down the walls,
Rock the foundations,
Until the house falls.
Like a pack of cards,
Crashing to the ground.
Then we'll build a row
Of identical boxes
And sell them all off at treble the profits.
Demolition.

The deeds are in my pocket,
I've got a contract in my hand.
An opportunity for luxury living.
I'll arrange the mortgage
To be repaid a hundred percent.
I can't wait around so make your decision.
We'll buy up all the cottages
And every house and every street,
Until we've got everything we need.
Every town in the vicinity,
Every farm and village green.
We're gonna buy up everything,
Then it's Demolition.
Demolition. Demolition.

Two up, two down,
It hasn't got a garden,
But it's got a lovely patio.
Stainless steel kitchen sink,
Gas fired central heating,
Whaaa - specifically designed for modern-day living,
Nothing's permanent and nothing lasts,
We've sold all the houses so put 'em up fast.
We're gonna buy up this town
And pull it all down.
How I love to hear the demolition sound
Of concrete crashing to the ground.
Demolition.

It's time to make some money,
It's time to get rich quick.
It's the wonderful world of capitalism.
I've got to make a profit,
I've got to satisfy my greed,
It's my faith and my religion,
Demolition. Demolition. Demolition.
And we'll buy up the towns,
And we'll knock 'em all down
Build a brand new world of our own.
[Repeat]

I hear a Zappa style here with a little Blondie thrown in.

The Kinks were an English version of a Hippie Society.
